Our interview today is with a Social Media Expert – Meet Rachel Ayre.
Social media has been an ever-evolving field since Rachel started her first digital marketing role in 2012. She began working for a small marketing recruitment agency, managing their social media accounts and sharing a mixture of job advertisements, blogs and industry-related news. At Hit Search her team manages social accounts for a number of clients; from devising a social strategy to managing day-to-day scheduling and replying to brand mentions, it is a varied and ever-changing role.
Sharing some of her social media strategies, it’s truly an honor to host Rachel Ayre in our Agency expert interview series:
1. In constantly-changing fields such as social media, how do you regularly learn, update & improve your skillset?
Completing training courses is definitely a big help; the HubSpot Inbound qualification and Google AdWords qualification in particular have helped me developed my knowledge and skillset whilst working at Hit Search. In addition to this, I have various Google alerts set up for a number of terms, meaning I can catch up on relevant industry updates and news as and when they happen. I also regularly read SEO Land, Moz Blog, Social Media Examiner and Content Marketing Institute for a variety of social media and content-related posts.
2. What do you see as the most crucial components of a successful social media strategy?
Audience personas are always a crucial component when it comes to building a successful social media strategy. Ensuring you know who your audiences are and tailoring social content (and paid social ads) towards these audiences is what makes your content relevant and interesting to the right people.
3. What’s the best thing about being a social media manager, and what are the most frustrating things?
The best thing is seeing a campaign through from start to finish, and seeing how successful it has been. Even if results aren’t as you predicted in the beginning, it is always valuable to be able to notice where you could have improved and apply these things to your next campaign. It is quite frustrating that social media isn’t as easily measured as other digital specialisms, but as time goes on it is getting easier to measure social campaigns – particularly if they are paid posts, as they have accurate data to analyse!
4. How do use social media to a direct impact on conversion rates and sales?
As mentioned earlier, we ensure that the content going out on social media is tailored to the appropriate audiences – this is done with an aim to increase conversions. The more likely people are to read the content you are pushing out via social, the more likely they are to stay onsite and as a result, convert.
5. What do you believe has been your greatest career accomplishment? Why?
I think the accomplishment I’m most proud of to date is getting a business’ LinkedIn company page from 15,000 to 55,000 followers in the space of a year. The reason I was so proud of this is because the business was in an industry that is typically quite corporate and formal, so devising the strategy for LinkedIn took a bit of testing, to begin with. When I discovered which kinds of posts people responded to most, we ran with it, and the number of followers soared. This resulted in more visits to the site and more conversions, so overall it was very successful.
Today we got to know a few social media strategies to boost up your brand’s online presence from the expert – Rachel Ayre. Going forward there are many more specialists that we want to chat with. We will resume our discussion with another expert in our next post.
Until then, Happy Marketing!!
