“I’m not afraid of storms, for I’m learning how to sail my ship.” – Mary Louise Alcott
Well, that’s me.
Fresh out of college with a degree in journalism. Now a Content Marketer!
I’ve always wanted to write and so the opportunity to write content for a marketing firm appealed to me. Having interned at a digital marketing agency previously helped me gain some industry knowledge. But I’m still learning on the job.
My day begins with two cups of coffee and a lot of reading – PPC Hero, Hubspot, Copyblogger, Wordstream and 10 other blogs. At times, it’s a massive information overload. And then to manage my work at the same time…pheww..hectic!
I was desperate to find a personal mentor, someone who’d tell me what’s gold and what’s not. I often fall for link baits. 🙁 That afternoon, I was watching Kevin Spacey’s wonderful keynote address at the Content Marketing World 2014, while having my lunch. That’s when Sophia walks in…..
Meet Sophia Benson. She is the new VP, Digital Marketing. She seemed really sweet just like her name but the office grapevine suggested otherwise. So I just decided to stay away.
But the more I saw her work, the more my admiration grew. When it came to marketing, she knew everything about everything. Now everybody looks up to her – she has practically become the human Wikipedia around here.
Finally, I got the chance to work alongside her earlier this month. I can now safely say that she’s a ‘Real Deal’! She is actually a very nice person, the gossip mongers were so wrong. What’s more is that the woman knows the marketing business inside out. I couldn’t resist but ask:
Me: So what’s your secret Sophia?
Sophia: What secret?
Me: You know, how do you know so much? You always seem to be a step ahead of everyone else? How do you manage to read so much?
Sophia: (laughs) Thank you. I just take a few breaks to keep myself updated.
Me: Huh? Breaks? Sophia for me taking a break would mean going to Vegas!
Sophia: Yeah! I go to Vegas sometimes and keep myself updated.(laughs again)
Me: What, how?
Sophia: I just attend a few conferences silly!
Oh, conferences! You get to travel and learn at the same time, sounds like a dream. I decided to attend one and see for myself. But there’s no dearth of conferences. So how do you decide which one is worth your time and money?
Find the complete infographic here.
These are some factors that Sophia asked me to consider before zeroing in on a conference:
- Focus of the Conference Vs My Goals
- Full Agenda of the Conference
- Speakers
- Attendees
- Location & Venue
- Budget
- Networking Opportunities
- Feedback from the Past Attendees

After a weekend of research, I found some of the best digital marketing conferences. I hope this list will save you some valuable time. It’s a long post so let me add a quick index:

Woah…now that’s some list!! I so feel like attending all of them…but few have passed which means I can attend them only next year and some are yet to announce their details. But there are many which are scheduled in near future and for which registrations are open. I will pick from those.
The good news is that most companies encourage and allow employees to attend relevant conferences. Also, the conference organizers assist the interested candidates in getting permits and visas. Hope my company grants me leaves to attend my favourite conferences.
I believe Sophia can/will help me in this. 🙂
Fingers crossed!
