1. Facebook – Background colours for text:
What did I miss? : Facebook has introduced a new feature that could let you do the next best thing: adding background colour to your posts.
What’s new? : The feature lets users select a colour that appears behind their text status in place of the normally-white background. Several of the colour options offer an Instagram logo-style colour gradient, which make them more stylish and modern than boring flat colours.
Is this for me? : This new feature is rolling out for Android users initially, although all users will be able to see background colours that have been added to posts, and Facebook said iOS and the web will follow soon.
Is Facebook trying to steal thunder from twitter? : Facebook seemed to already be encouraging text status updates with a ‘big text’ feature that shows words in a larger font if your status is short, thereby making it more attention-grabbing.This feature can be seen as a copy from twitter which is the most ubiquitous text-focused social network, though one dwarfed in size by Facebook.
Takeaways: Adding spice to status updates could help Facebook boost “original sharing” of unique personal content, as opposed to re-sharing of news articles and viral videos. With the rice media coming out more like 360, and VR as the future of sharing on Facebook.
But there will always be some things best expressed with some simple words. Coloured backgrounds make sure a spontaneous exclamation or a bit of poetry won’t get lost in the increasingly flashy feed.

2. Twitter shakes up its search results:
What’s this about? : Twitter no longer wants to show you just what’s new in its search results, it wants to show you who tweeted it best.
What’s new? : Tweets are now going to be ranked based on relevance instead of by timeline. The platform has moved further away from reverse chronological order in search to relevance order.
Is it so simple for twitter? : It’s not that simple, the freshest tweets don’t necessarily contain the most useful information, but relevancy isn’t simple either. Especially when you have to cull from all of Twitter and not just from the accounts users follow. While alterations to the Twitter timeline algorithm caused the internet to briefly lose its mind in early 2016, changes to search are unlikely to cause much of a stir.
Takeaways: The effort was intended to make the service more appealing for new and casual users, so that they’ll be able to see interesting tweets instead of things that are just passing them by, diversity of results also matters.

3. Facebook Messenger’s now support group video chat:
What’s this about? : Facebook added video conversation into its messenger app this fall to encourage users to treat the app as their default communication method, not only locally but internationally.
What’s new? : A group video chat can hold up to 50 people participating in different ways — up to six people can be seen at a time, but 50 can listen and respond using text, stickers, emojis, and GIFs. In a way, it’s akin to Google Hangouts — the latter lets us to 10 people participate, while others can listen without participating.
Is Facebook the first one to do so? : Facebook isn’t the first one to move into this space, as it now further competes against Skype and Google. Last week, Line added group video chat for up to 200 people, and today Kik added group video chat to its app. But Messenger is the first of the Facebook properties to support group video calls — WhatsApp doesn’t currently support it.
Does it make sense? : Messenger already has group audio calls and one-on-one video chats, so the addition of group video makes sense – in fact, according to Facebook it’s “the most requested Messenger feature ever”.
Takeaways: It’s very interesting to see Facebook coming out with new features for messenger and this shows that Facebook is trying out experimenting new ideas to grab the market and also trying to make Facebook a single place where you get everything.
