1. Twitter DMs get better with newly added Automated Customer Response Tools.

What? : Twitter have taken their first steps towards tapping into the wider messaging trend, and the use of automated responses, with new features being added to Twitter’s direct messaging tools to better automate and streamline the customer query process.

What are the updates ? : Twitter’s new welcome messages and quick replies help brands automate their direct message conversations with customers.

How does it work ? : Twitter’s adding new automated elements into the brand messaging process, making it easier for users to get faster responses, and easier for brands to action them without putting additional pressure on their existing resources.

Quick Replies : With Twitter’s quick replies the idea is that brands will map out a conversation flow ahead of time and create quick replies that will prompt people for the information a brand needs to follow that flow.

Welcome Messages : These customizable welcome messages help brands set greetings specific to the context in which a DM conversation was initiated. Businesses can create multiple welcome messages and deep link directly to a specific greeting from Tweets, websites, or apps.

Takeaway : With this update, it is evident that a battle has initiated  between Twitter and Facebook Messenger to serve as marketers’ favorite social customer service channels.

2. Instagram Adds Shopping Tags to Boost Product Discovery.

What’s new ? : To boost up their eCommerce platform and enhance product discovery process, Instagram started to add shopping tags in photos.

How does this work ? : Instagram started to add shopping tags to the posts so that it can enhance the product discovery for users.

  • On photos from selected retailers, users will now see a “Tap to view products” tag in the bottom left of the image.
  • Once tapped, a new set of tags will appear overlaid on the post denoting products and their prices.
  • Users can then tap to find out more information, taking them to a specific product page for each item.
  • And if you want to make a purchase, you can tap through to be linked to the relevant product page on the web.

How are these Shopping Tags useful ? : The most significant benefit the new option could provide is in avoiding having to write  “link in bio” note in the post caption to connect potential customers to more information about your products.

How is this different from Pinterest ? : Instagram isn’t in line with Pinterest in terms of on-platform purchases. This new option links you off to the relevant product page on the web and Instagram isn’t looking to enable in-app buying yet, which Pinterest is doing with their Buyable Pins.

Takeaway : Instagram plans to monetize this product by later allowing brands to pay to show their shoppable photos to people who don’t follow.

3. Pinterest pulls Ads, makes Instapaper Premium free.

What’s it about ? : Pinterest is removing two revenue streams from Instapaper, the read-it-later service it bought in August 2016.

What’s the summary ? : Pinterest is making its first major change to Instapaper. Instead of syndicating its own ads on Instapaper’s site and apps, Pinterest is pulling all ads from Instapaper. It’s not a massive change; Instapaper’s apps never featured ads, and its site wasn’t overloaded with ads.

What’s changed? : Users will now have access to features such as full-text search for all articles, unlimited notes and speed reading, text-to-speech playlists, an ad-free Instapaper website, Kindle Digests of up to 50 articles, and the ability to send articles to Kindle through a bookmarklet or mobile app. These were previously only available if you paid $3 per month or $30 per year.

Takeaway : It’s likely that making the premium features available free for everyone could spark an uptick in usage, giving the Pinterest-owned company additional data for any experiments or product they’re developing.
